In this installation, we settled two webcams and connected two places by a video call. One subject was transported to another place by wireless data transfer and could see the whole virtual interaction between him and the subject on the other room. Our goal was to achieve a virtual meeting and to be able to create a shared space by ignoring the physical distances between the intervenients.
In a second installation, we projected a virtual distant place and settled a wind sensor, then asked people to interact with it. An environmental change in that place was created in a result of that interaction. We wanted to demonstrate a state of presence by a distant virtual action and that physical presence is no longer needed for an interaction to happen.
In the last installation, we displayed an illusory object. People were able to see it directly and through a screen connected to a webcam, then questioned “How real does it look like?”. The object was created to elude through a certain camera angle and people looked puzzled to it. Our goal was to report the sense of reality that people experienced when looking to objects through the screen.

“x kB away” reflects about a key-notion of our contemporaneity - the presence - trying to find where the youngsters of today are, who seem to be nowhere, when in fact they are everywhere.

The notion of distance changed with the technological advances, the acceleration, the feeling that we can be everywhere at any time are the starting points of this project. The limits between real and virtual faded, interconnected by concepts like online identity and telepresence. The physicality is no longer necessary in communication and the feeling of presence now depends on the data transfer between two points.

Our project consists in a publication and a set of audiovisual installations, answering our theme “The Place Where Youngsters Are”.

“The Place Where Youngsters Are” is a printed editorial publication that explores the them that supports the project "xkB away”. It explains the new concept of presence which evolved along with the technologic advances, an innate reality for the youngsters. The main reference At the Heart of It All: The Concept of Presence" by Matthew Lombard and Theresa Ditton is complemented with other authors' works and the product of our own installations.

Numa primeira instalação, colocámos duas cameras web e conectámos dois espaços através de uma chamada de vídeo. Um sujeito era transportado para outro lugar através da transferência de dados sem-fios e conseguia ver toda a interação entre ele e o sujeito do outro lado. O nosso objectivo era estabelecer uma conferência através da criação de um espaço partilhado que anulasse as distâncias físicas entre os intervenientes.
Numa segunda instalação pedimos às pessoas que diante de uma projecção de um local virtual distante interagissem com um sensor. Através de um sopro, os intervenientes causavam uma mudança no ambiente desse espaço virtual. Com isto queríamos demonstrar um estatuto de presença através de uma acção virtual à distância e mostrar que a presença física já não é neccessária para haver uma interação.
Numa terceira e última instalação, demonstrámos um objecto ilusório ao vivo e através de um ecrã ligado a uma camera web. O objecto foi criado para se comportar de forma diferente quando observado directamente ou através de um certo ângulo de camera, algo que intrigava as pessoas e que as levava a questionar de que forma era o objecto real. O nosso objectivo foi questionar as pessoas acerca da veracidade dos objectos que são vistos através do ecrã.

“X kB away” reflecte sobre uma noção-chave da nossa contemporaneidade – a presença – procurando traçar o paradeiro dos jovens de hoje, que aparentam não estar em lugar algum, quando na verdade se encontram em todo o lado.

A noção de distância perante os avanços tecnológicos, a aceleração, a sensação de que podemos estar em qualquer lugar, a qualquer momento são o ponto de partida deste projecto. Os limites entre o real e o virtual diluem-se, interligados por conceitos como a identidade online e a telepresença. A fisicalidade deixou de ser algo essencial na comunicação e a sensação de presença depende agora da transferência de dados entre dois pontos.

Um objecto editorial e um conjunto de intervenções audiovisuais materializam a nossa reflexão em torno do mote “The Place Where Youngsters Are”.
