Free Speech Movement
Maria Teixeira
“The topic tonight “Can students change the world?”
— I gave away the answer already, I’m sorry! — is a huge one and we will only have time to do a slice of it, mostly from the sixties. I only wanted to mention at the beginning that students changed America in major ways both during and before the sixties. If you are a student and have a work study job you can thank the student activists of the 1930s (...). College students were some of the shock troops for the women’s suffrage movement, so they helped women
to get the right to vote. The FSM legacy, I would say,
it is obviously no museum piece. It had an impact on the University indoors and in simple cases free speech today
is still a matter of some controversy.” Robert Cohen (2014), “Can Students change the world?”
